Lakeland Golf Cart Repair: Frequently Asked Questions
These are the questions Lakeland and Polk County cart owners ask most, answered the way a technician would answer them in your driveway. Prices come from the pricing page, where every range is published. The Florida rules come from F.S. 316.212, 316.2122, and 320.01, read directly from the statutes; the full plain-English version is on our street-legal rules page.
If your question is not here, describe the symptom and your cart’s brand and battery count and we will answer it directly, usually with a flat price attached. For what the service is and is not, see the about page. For the core visit itself, start with mobile golf cart repair.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does mobile golf cart repair cost in Lakeland?
The service call is $50 to $100 depending on where you are in the Lakeland area and includes the on-site diagnostic; it is applied toward the repair when you approve the work. Typical repairs: solenoid $100 to $250, brake adjustment about $75, tires $75 to $150 each, lead-acid battery pack $1,200 to $1,800, lithium conversion $1,600 to $3,500. Full tables are on the pricing page.
How long do golf cart batteries last around Lakeland?
Lead-acid packs are rated for roughly 4 to 6 years, and here they trend toward the short end. NOAA's Lakeland station counts 118.7 days a year at 90°F or above, and heat evaporates electrolyte and speeds sulfation. Monthly watering in warm months, clean terminals, and full recharges after each use are what push a pack toward 5 or 6.
How do I know if the batteries are actually bad?
Three signs in order: range keeps shrinking, the charger runs longer than it used to, and the cart sags at the end of a run. But a failing charger or a corroded main cable produces the same symptoms, so we load-test each battery individually and test the charger's output before recommending a pack. Sometimes one bad battery is dragging down five good ones.
Is lithium worth it for a Lakeland cart?
For a daily driver, often yes: 7 to 10 or more years of life, no watering, faster charging, and steady power to the last mile, at $1,600 to $3,500 installed. Lakeland's own Cleveland Heights Golf Course moved its entire 100-cart municipal fleet to lithium with Club Car in early 2025. For a cart that goes out twice a week, a quality lead-acid pack at $1,200 to $1,800 usually wins the math. We run your actual mileage, not a script.
Can I drive my golf cart on public streets in Lakeland?
Under F.S. 316.212 a golf cart may only use county roads or city streets that have been designated for carts. We searched the City of Lakeland's and Polk County's codes of ordinances and found no such designation. Until one exists, a golf cart here stays on private property and community roads under whatever rules that property or community sets.
What is The Squeeze, and does it mean golf carts are legal downtown?
The Squeeze is a free shuttle that has run open-air, eight-passenger golf carts around downtown Lakeland since November 2021 (Dixieland residents have asked for it to be extended to their neighborhood). We could not confirm the legal basis for that route in the city's code, so we do not treat it as evidence that any public street is designated for private golf carts.
What is the difference between a golf cart and a low-speed vehicle in Florida?
F.S. 320.01 defines a golf cart as not capable of exceeding 20 mph and a low-speed vehicle as topping out above 20 but not above 25 mph. An LSV under F.S. 316.2122 is titled, registered, insured, driven by a licensed driver, allowed on streets posted 35 mph or less, and must carry headlamps, stop lamps, signals, taillamps, reflectors, parking brake, mirrors, windshield, seat belts, and a VIN, plus meet the federal low-speed vehicle standard, 49 CFR 571.500.
Can I drive my cart at night?
On a designated public street, only if the local government has allowed night operation and the cart has headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and a windshield, per F.S. 316.212(5). Since we could not find a designated cart street in Lakeland or Polk County, this mostly comes down to what your own property or community allows. We install and repair lighting to the statute's list regardless.
Does a teenager need a license to drive the cart?
On a public designated street, yes. F.S. 316.212(7), in effect since October 1, 2023, says a person under 18 may operate a golf cart on a designated street only with a valid learner's driver license or driver license, and a person 18 or older must carry valid government-issued photo identification. There is no age-14 exception in the current statute.
My cart clicks but does not move. Is that expensive?
Usually not. The click is the solenoid engaging; if the cart does not move, the solenoid contacts are often burned, or the pack cannot deliver current under load, or the controller is not getting a throttle signal. Solenoid replacement runs $100 to $250 installed and is often a same-visit fix. Ask for the test result before any part is replaced.
My cart will not charge. Do I need new batteries?
Not necessarily, and often not. A charger that will not turn on is frequently a charge-port fault, a blown fuse, or a pack so discharged the charger cannot detect it. We test the charger's output at the plug and the port for continuity before anyone talks about batteries. Charger repairs run $100 to $300; full replacement $300 to $800.
How often should I water lead-acid batteries here?
Every two to four weeks from May through September, and every six to eight weeks the rest of the year. Use distilled water, fill only after a full charge, and cover the plates by about a quarter inch without overfilling. Heat is the driver: Lakeland's July and August highs average above 92°F.
Do you work on gas carts?
Yes. Most carts in this area are electric, but gas carts get the same mobile service: starter-generators, belts, carburetors, fuel systems, plugs, and filters. A gas tune-up runs $150 to $300.
Do you service carts inside golf course communities?
Yes. Sanlan RV & Golf Resort, off US 98 South, is a routine stop, and we schedule gated-community visits so the guardhouse expects the truck at the window we agree on.
Are you an authorized dealer for any cart brand?
No. We are an independent mobile repair service, not an authorized dealer or warranty center for Club Car, E-Z-GO, Yamaha, ICON, or Evolution. If your cart is under factory warranty, your selling dealer is the right call. For everything out of warranty, we come to you.
What should I do with the cart before a hurricane?
Charge it fully and unplug the charger before the power goes out or a surge comes back. Hurricane Milton in October 2024 put 13.13 inches of rain through Lakeland's own airport. Afterward, do not charge a pack that took on water until it has been inspected.
Is golf cart theft a real risk around Lakeland?
The Polk County Sheriff's Office has logged golf cart thefts in the Lakeland area, including a run of at least six carts taken from addresses in one neighborhood over about six weeks in late 2021. Their published advice: take the key out, add a locked chain, and consider a GPS tracker or an AirTag in the battery bay.
How fast can you get to me?
Same-day or next-day for most calls. Lakeland proper is the core of the route; Plant City, Polk City, and Mulberry are the far ends and sit at the top of the trip-fee range. Describe the symptom well and the technician can usually bring the likely fix on the first visit.
